SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Grown Restorative Hair Serum

Standard

Another super long name from SheaMoisture! But, another great product as well! The SheaMoisture JBCO line is specifically tailored for those that have natural, chemically processed, color treated or heat styled hair. This line is meant to “nourish, heal and grow your hair! Due to the variety of ingredients in this product that are meant to stimulate hair growth, ladies who are trying to grow their edges back, this a great product for that! I purchased this product from CVS for $10.99 for 2 fl oz.

INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN

Organic Shea Butter–“Deeply moisturizes while conditioning hair and scalp.” Every product junkie and naturalista AND curlie should know about the wonders of Shea Butter for hair! If you don’t, shame on you! However, here’s a great article by Curly Nikki that’ll enlighten you however. A brief overview of the benefits of Shea Butter are: (1) hair softener, (2) shields against UV Rays, (3) Protects against heat, (4) Sealant for the hair, aaand (5) Soothes irritated scalp.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil–“Loaded with reparative omegas that promote healthy hair growth.” The growing effects of JBCO has recently driven many women to start hair challenges to show that it really works. Specifically, however, this oil “will moisturize, thicken, strengthen and rapidly increase hair growth. It increases blood flow to the scalp, supplying valuable nutrients to hair follicles. Jamaican Black Castor Oil will also prevent hair breakages, dandruff, eczema and dry, itchy scalp.” To read more about this great oil, read this very informative article on Naturally Curly.

Rosemary Oil“stimulates scalp circulation to help support healthy hair growth.” I love love rosemary oil! I use it the majority of my DIY hair products (which you can read more about in DIY Treatments) If you want more growing benefits, you can add a few drops of peppermint oil to the mix.

HOW TO USE IT

The instructions say to “massage a few drops gently into scalp as often as needed. Do not rinse out. Style as desired. For a restorative hot oil treatment, massage gently into scalp and hair. Cover with a plastic cap and apply moderate heat for 5 to 15 minutes depending on your hair’s condition. Shampoo and conditioner after treatment. Style as desired.”

HOW I USE IT

I use it similarly as the directions instruct. When using as a hot oil treatment, however, rather than apply the oil BEFORE shampooing and conditioning, I like to use after conditioning–applying on my scalp while applying a deep conditioner to the length of my hair.

SheaMoisture Superfruit Complex 10-in-1 Renewal System Hair & Scalp Serum

Standard

Talk about a long name for a serum, right?! 🙂 Now, because this product is a concoction of yummy oils, this will be more of a nontraditional product review. Unlike a shampoo, conditioner, curl defining creme, etc I can’t provide you with pictures of my results or thorough details on how it feels and works. So, instead, I’ll do all that to the best of my ability while ALSO breaking down the ingredients of this product. I purchased this product from ULTA (10.99 for 2 fl oz) while it was on buy one get one half off. Unfortunately, they only had this serum and the shampoo available so I won’t be able to review the rest of the line until they get the conditioner and masque in (not that I need any more products in my stash) BUT, until then, here’s a YouTube vlog that does a great job of reviewing this new SheaMoisture line!

INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN

This product boasts about it’s “Superfruit Complex.” The packaging describes this complex as “a blend of Red Raspberry, Ketaones, Goji, Acai, and Guava Extracts.”

This product also contains Marula Oil. What is Marula oil you wonder? Marula Oil is derived from fruit seed kernels that are indigenous to Southern Africa and Madagascar. In short, this oil ” contains powerful antioxidants, high concentrations of nutrients, minerals and essential fatty acids that protect against environmental aggressors, reverse photodamage, boost cellular activity, hydrate at the deepest levels and repair the skin.” Boost cellular activity? Perfect for hair growth. Protect against environmental aggressors? Perfect for those of us who are struggling with the DC heat and humidity this summer. For a more in depth look at this wonderful oil, visit this article. Curly Nikki also featured this oil on a blog post about “7 Exotic Hair Butters & Oil For Natural Hair Greatness.”

Lastly, the packaging talks about Biotin which “nourishes individual strands for thicker, stronger hair.” We alll know about the thickening, growing effects of Biotin. BUt, if for some reason, you’ve been living under a rock, let this article enlighten you on Biotin’s wondrous effects!

HOW TO USE IT

The packaging says to “Shake well before using to get the full benefit. Apply uniformed oil serum directly to scalp and work through hair paying particular attention to the ends. For best results, leave on for one hour then cleanse and condition with 10-IN-1 Renewal System Shampoo and Conditioner. Style as usual. For a nourishing boost of moisture, apply a few drops of serum as needed. Upon sitting, the product will separate into 2 phases.”

HOW I USE IT

As the directions said, I applied this as a pre-wash. I parted my hair into four sections and applied the serum to each section of my hair, making sure to massage it into my scalp and work down to my ends. Then, I applied a DIY pre-poo (jojoba oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, mango butter, and shea butter) to the length of my hair and ends. Waited an hour and rinsed. As to be expected, my hair DID feel super moisturized and, specifically due to this serum, my scalp was way more hydrated. Once my hair was dry, none of those annoying dry scalp flakes that I was getting around my crown were in existence! This will certainly be a staple to use when doing hot oil treatments or in conjunction with my pre-poo’s. Oh, AND, it smells SO GOOD lol

B.A.S.K. Yam Nectar Intense Hair Nourisher

Standard

So, I’m new to the B.A.S.K product line but I have to say, so far, I’m a fan! I used this nectar as a pre poo (and a bit as a DC) because my hair needed an intense boost of moisture. This nectar delivered soft, super hydrated hair! The consistency, as you can see the YouTube video and the picture below, is exactly like honey. From the feel, the texture, and the consistency–straight honey! For that reason, you want to make sure that whether you are using this Nectar as a pre poo or a DC, you apply to damp (if not wet) hair. Makes all the difference in the world! The Y.A.M. in the product name stands for Yucca-infused olive, Avocado, & Meadowfoam that are all meant to infuse hair with some serious hydration! For all your visual learners out there, here’s a YouTube video that reviews this product as well. I got this product from a product swap but it can be purchased on the B.A.S.K site for $20 for oz. That price is a little steep BUT a little goes a long way with this product and the results are truly worth it!

INGREDIENTS

Pure Clover Honey, Vegetable Glycerin, Yucca Oil (Virgin Olive Oil infused w/ Yucca Root), Avocado Oil, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Manuka Honey, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol, Panthenol, Essential oils of Rosewood & Copaiba, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol (and) Ethylhexylglycerin.

HOW I USE IT

If using as a pre poo, apply to damp hair. If using as a DC, apply to WET hair. I section my hair off into four sections and apply to each section, making sure to start with my ends and work my way up. I detangle with a wide tooth comb while I add this nectar in and then pile my hair into a top knot but making sure to leave my ends exposed. I then sit under my hair steamer for 30 minutes, rinse, and my hair is left SUPER hydrated. A note of warning, you will have to rinse your hair TWICE because this product, just like honey, is heavy and requires the extra rinse. The results make it worth it, love it!

Lush Superbalm Scalp Treatment

Standard

I’m a firm believer that healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp! For that reason (and more) I love this Lush Superbalm Scalp Treatment!! Everytime I use it my scalp feels clean and refreshed! I must admit that I don’t suffer from severe dry scalp or dandruff, as this product mainly calls for. I do, however, experience bouts of dry, tight scalp. Although they are minor, they still happen and this product stops any itching or tightness that I feel. I like to use this product biweekly and even add a few drops of peppermint oil in to the mix to get my circulation flowing. I purchased this product from Lush for $20 for 1.5 oz. It IS pricy but a little goes a long long way! The Lush website features of video on how to apply the treatment to your scalp while this article details the importance of scalp treatments.

INGREDIENTS

Salicylic Acid , Rose Wax (Rosa damascena) , Lavender Oil (Lavandula augustifolia) , Chamomile Blue Oil (Matricaria Chamomilla) , Rose Absolute (Rosa damascena) , Fragrance , Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera) , Candelilla Wax (Euphorbia cerifera) , *Limonene , *Linalool , *Geraniol , *Citronellol

HOW I USE IT

I use this treatment before I shampoo (bi weekly). I generally apply it to my scalp at the same time as I’m applying my pre poo treatment to the length of my hair. So, I separate my hair into four sections. Within these four sections, I apply this treatment to my scalp making sure not to get any into my hair as it can be difficult to wash out, especially for those with thick hair. After I have applied to all sections, I make sure to massage my scalp thoroughly. As I stated above, I like to add in a few drops of peppermint oil so I really get my circulation flowing!!

As I apply my pre poo treatment along with this scalp treatment, when I’m done applying I sit under my hair steamer for 20 minutes. Afterwards, I rinse out and voila, a clean refreshed scalp is what I’m left with! Because I don’t suffer from dandruff, I can’t assure that this product actually removes all dandruff but in experience Lush products always deliver. All in all, scalp treatments promote healthy hair and hair growth!! I will definitely purchase this again!

Jasmine & Henna Fluff-Eaze Hair Treatment

Standard

I am in absolute LOVE with this product!! There is not a sufficient amount of words to express how much I currently love this product. Needless to say, these past two weeks have been great for me in my search for the perfect product for my hair. From Aunt Jackie’s Curl Custard to this Jasmine & Henna Fluff-Eaze Hair Treatment. I’m in product junkie heaven!
This is a pre wash hair treatment that promises to “get control of fluffy, untamed tresses and leave them calm, smooth and shiny–not to mention smelling irresistibly sexy.” It delivers on ALL of that! This hair treatment is meant to give you all the benefits of henna without having to color your hair with henna. If you don’t know about the wonders of henna for hair, read this article!
I was able to get this product from Lush for $22 for 7.9 oz. A little pricy but I estimate I’ll be about to get about 5-6 uses out of it, which is a lot for my thick hair.

INGREDIENTS

Red Henna Infusion (Lawsonia inermis) , Water (Aqua) , Cetearyl Alcohol and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , Fragrance , Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Olea europaea) , Olive Oil (Olea europaea) , Ylang Ylang Oil (Cananga odorata) , Jasmine Absolute (Jasminum officinale) , Cold Pressed Organic Wheatgerm Oil (Triticum vulgare) , Cold Pressed Organic Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia Chinensis) , Almond Oil (Prunus dulcis) , Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (Cocos nucifera) , Organic Hemp Oil (Cannabis sativa) , Brazil Nut Oil (Bertholletia Excelsa) , Benzyl Alcohol , Wheatgerm Oil (Triticum vulgare) , Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis) , Coconut Butter (Cocos nucifera) , Hemp Oil (Cannabis sativa) , Soya Oil (Glycine Soja) , Castor Oil (Ricinus communis) , *Benzyl Salicylate , *Benzyl Benzoate , *Farnesol , *Eugenol , *Limonene , *Geraniol , *Linalool , Hydroxycitronellol , Methyl Ionone , *Benzyl Alcohol , Isoeugenol , Methylparaben , Propylparaben

HOW I USE IT

Because this product is a pre-wash, it’s a pre-poo. So it’s meant to be used before your shampoo and condition your hair. Thus, I parted my hair into four sections, uncapped the tub, and began to apply to my hair section by section. This product has GREAT slip and leaves your hair feeling incredibly soft as soon as you fully saturate your hair with it. Pay special attention to the ends ladies!!

The instruction say to apply a thick coat and leave on for 20 minutes. I did as such but left on for about 30 minutes because I did a steam treatment with my beloved hair steamer! As soon as I rinsed out my hair, I followed with a sulfate free shampoo. My hair felt so soft that I HAD to step out of the shower and see what my hair looked like. I had the BEST curl definition I’ve ever had (without product–I tried to picture it below but it’s hard to see, just trust me) and my hair was frizz free and crazy soft. I did condition my hair afterwards but I skipped the deep condition cause my hair just felt THAT good!

This product also has an amazing Jasmine scent that is not too overpowering. 2 days after washing people standing close to me, especially my boyfriend, could still smell it and could not stop telling me how good my hair smelled.

This product is one that I will KEEP purchasing! I will do an update, however, after I’ve finished the tub as regular henna treatments are meant to improve your hair’s porosity. Until then, try it for yourself!
