Lately there have been commercials advertising these L’Oreal products that are supposed to thicken hair. I’ve heard this claim one too many times, but this time something caught my attention. These products contain Filloxane. What is this you ask? Filloxane is a type of silica gel. It works in your hair by using the same mode of action as silica gel to seal up cracks (like those of a windshield), L’Oreal claims that the molecule penetrates the hair shaft to thicken the hair protein microfibrils. I’m not a bio or chemistry major so if you want to know more specifics about how filloxane works I would suggest reading this great article OR this article (by Allure) that also talks about filloxane and how it relates to L’Oreals new thickening hair product line!
Now, at first try, I do think this product works. I’ve noticed increased thickness of my hair after styling AND right after I applied the product to my hair, in the shower. The only drawbacks are that 1) this product contains sulfates. HATE sulfates. 2) It provides NO moisture, probably because it contains sulfates. Because my hair is already thick, this wouldn’t be a conditioner/treatment I use often so I can deal with a little sulfate every now and then (read: rarely). If you can’t, or if you already have super dry hair, this isn’t for you. I plan on using these products twice more and documenting in pictures how much bigger my hair gets but for now there is a comparison below.
I purchased this product from Walgreens for $5 for the conditioner and $6 for the ampules.
Aqua/Water/Eau, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Coco-betaine, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Chloride, Glycol Distearate, Hexylene Glycol, Aminopropyl Triethoxysilane, Parfum/ Fragrance, Hydroxypropyl Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Lactic Acid, Alcohol Denat., Polyquaternium- 30, Carbomer, Linalool, Limonene, Citronellol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Sodium Hydroxide.
Volume Filler (Ampule):
Aqua/Water/Eau, Aminopropyl Triethoxysilane,peg-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Lactic Acid, Parfum/Fragrance,hydroxyethylcellulose, Linalool, Limonene, citronellol, Geraniol.
HOW I USE IT
When it comes to the conditioner, you apply in the same way you apply all conditioners–right after a fresh shampoo. The ampules are meant to be applied WITH the conditioner. So, after a shampoo, pour a generous amount of the conditioner into your hand. Then, with the conditioner in your hand, squeeze the serum that is in the ampule into the conditioner in your hand. Mix and apply to your hair. You may have to do this twice as there is a lot of serum in one ampule. Wait 3 minutes and then rinse out. As I stated above, you really do feel your hair thickening up almost instantly! So, at first glance, I can say I truly believe this product works!
The top row is my this past week. Top Left: AFter a shampoo and condition. Top Right: After styling
The bottom row is after using this product for the first time. Bottom Left: After shampoo and condition. Bottom Right: After styling. As you can see, my hair is already super thick but this product helped to thicken up the left side of my hair and to round out the bottom.
