SheaMoisture Superfruit Complex 10-in-1 Renewal System Hair & Scalp Serum

Standard

Talk about a long name for a serum, right?! 🙂 Now, because this product is a concoction of yummy oils, this will be more of a nontraditional product review. Unlike a shampoo, conditioner, curl defining creme, etc I can’t provide you with pictures of my results or thorough details on how it feels and works. So, instead, I’ll do all that to the best of my ability while ALSO breaking down the ingredients of this product. I purchased this product from ULTA (10.99 for 2 fl oz) while it was on buy one get one half off. Unfortunately, they only had this serum and the shampoo available so I won’t be able to review the rest of the line until they get the conditioner and masque in (not that I need any more products in my stash) BUT, until then, here’s a YouTube vlog that does a great job of reviewing this new SheaMoisture line!

INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN

This product boasts about it’s “Superfruit Complex.” The packaging describes this complex as “a blend of Red Raspberry, Ketaones, Goji, Acai, and Guava Extracts.”

This product also contains Marula Oil. What is Marula oil you wonder? Marula Oil is derived from fruit seed kernels that are indigenous to Southern Africa and Madagascar. In short, this oil ” contains powerful antioxidants, high concentrations of nutrients, minerals and essential fatty acids that protect against environmental aggressors, reverse photodamage, boost cellular activity, hydrate at the deepest levels and repair the skin.” Boost cellular activity? Perfect for hair growth. Protect against environmental aggressors? Perfect for those of us who are struggling with the DC heat and humidity this summer. For a more in depth look at this wonderful oil, visit this article. Curly Nikki also featured this oil on a blog post about “7 Exotic Hair Butters & Oil For Natural Hair Greatness.”

Lastly, the packaging talks about Biotin which “nourishes individual strands for thicker, stronger hair.” We alll know about the thickening, growing effects of Biotin. BUt, if for some reason, you’ve been living under a rock, let this article enlighten you on Biotin’s wondrous effects!

HOW TO USE IT

The packaging says to “Shake well before using to get the full benefit. Apply uniformed oil serum directly to scalp and work through hair paying particular attention to the ends. For best results, leave on for one hour then cleanse and condition with 10-IN-1 Renewal System Shampoo and Conditioner. Style as usual. For a nourishing boost of moisture, apply a few drops of serum as needed. Upon sitting, the product will separate into 2 phases.”

HOW I USE IT

As the directions said, I applied this as a pre-wash. I parted my hair into four sections and applied the serum to each section of my hair, making sure to massage it into my scalp and work down to my ends. Then, I applied a DIY pre-poo (jojoba oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, mango butter, and shea butter) to the length of my hair and ends. Waited an hour and rinsed. As to be expected, my hair DID feel super moisturized and, specifically due to this serum, my scalp was way more hydrated. Once my hair was dry, none of those annoying dry scalp flakes that I was getting around my crown were in existence! This will certainly be a staple to use when doing hot oil treatments or in conjunction with my pre-poo’s. Oh, AND, it smells SO GOOD lol

SheaMoisture Tahitian Noni and Monoi Scalp and Hair Weekly Therapy

Standard

This pre-poo gave my hair life! I used this after a 3 day old wash and go. My hair was dry, tired and thirsty for moisture. This pre-poo delivered just that. I was able to find this pre-poo at Target as they’re only available at select Target stores right now. It was $10 for 4 fl oz.

HOW I USED IT

This product is a pre-poo, meaning you put it on your hair before shampooing. Because of the wash and go, I had product in my hair and wanted to get the majority out so I could really test this product out. So, for this reason I dunked my head under my shower’s running faucet and rinsed and rinsed with water. After toweling drying, I sectioned my hair into fours and applied liberally to each section. I couldn’t find my wide tooth comb so I just used my Tangle Tamer to distribute this throughout my hair. This product has amazing slip which makes detangling and distribution ten times easier. Also, moisture, moisture, moisture! My hair felt instantly softer after applying this product!!

The instructions say to wait 20-40 minutes before rinsing out. So, after piling my hair on top of my head (after application), I promptly went to my trusty hair steamer and stayed underneath it for 30 minutes. When the timer sounded, I emerged from underneath my hair steamer and couldn’t wait to touch my hair! What did I feel? Soft moisturized locks!! Even after I rinsed the product out, before shampooing, my hair was super soft!

Love this product and will be purchasing again!

Burt’s Bees Avocado Butter Pre Shampoo Hair Treatment

Standard

The hair market is beginning to offer more pre shampoo treatment products as more and more women are embracing the “no poo movement.” I stated in a previous blog that I’m not a fan of this movement because a conditioner simply does not have the same cleansing qualities that a shampoo does. Doing a pre shampoo treatment is a way to escape the harsh stripping of the natural oils within the hair that happens when shampoo, instead allowing your hair to be cleansed but retain moisture. Here is an article that explains the importance of pre shampooing as well as a YouTube video that shows a good way to apply a pre shampoo treatment.

One of the first pre shampoo treatments that I ever tried was this Burt’s Bees Avocado Butter Pre-Shampoo Hair Treatment. While I enjoy this product, I actually prefer to do my own DIY Pre Shampoo Treatments but it is nice to mix this product in with my own DIY treatments.

INGREDIENTS

Vegetable Glycerin , Olive Oil , Avocado (Persea Gratissima) Oil , Oat Flour , Lecithin , Sucrose Stearate , Sucrose Distearate , Magnesium Stearate , Citrus Rind Oil , Oat Kernel Oil , Chlorophyll , Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E)Vitamin E , Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Leaf Powder , Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Powder , Vegetable Oil , Fragrance

This product contains vegetable glycerin which is an amazing natural humectant, like honey, that naturally attracts moisture. The olive and almond oil in this product also gives hair great shine while the avocado provides a high amount of moisture.

When applying this product to my hair, I like to start off with dry hair. I section my hair into four sections to ensure equal distribution. I then use a spray bottle, filled with water, to dampen my hair. I first apply this pre shampoo treatment on each sections of my hair and then my own DIY mixture treatment or coconut oil on top of the mixture. I use a wide tooth comb to detangle my hair. It’s important to note this product does not contain any slip, at all. So using your own DIY mixture or coconut oil is important when detangling because it provides the necessary slip needed to detangle. After applying this mixture, usually before bed, I pile my hair into a top knot and place a plastic cap over it to lock in natural heat. I sleep with my pre shampoo treatments on and when I wake up I like to sit under my hair steamer for about 15 minutes to ensure maximum penetration. I then wash the pre shampoo treatment out and shampoo and condition as usual! I do like this product but I do think it is more effective, and less costly, to make your own.
