SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow, + Restore Treatment Masque

Standard

I don’t…really know what’s gotten into SheaMoisture but they have seriously stepped up their hair masque game with this new JBCO line and the Manuka Honey line! This masque is SO GOOD! Overall, the masque is meant to “help promote growth by supporting hair’s elasticity, reducing the appearance of breakage and shredding.” The JBCO line is meant for for those who “regularly color, straighten, perm or heat style their hair, as well as kinky, curly or wavy natural styles.” I no longer perm my hair nor do I use heat on a regular basis BUT I am transitioning so I need all the moisturizing masques I can get my product junkie hands on. SO I was thrilled when I rinsed this masque out and it left my hair so soft, shiny, detangled, on and on. The only drawback? It smelled a little like…play-doh. It wasn’t TOO strong and I didn’t smell it once I rinsed the masque out but yea…slight kindergarten flashbacks when applying it to my hair. Also, the packaging boasts about the addition of peppermint oil which is meant to “stimulate the scalp for an invigorating experience.” Yea…I didn’t feel the peppermint oil. Nonetheless, I loved this product and I would highly recommend it! I purchased this masque at CVS for $12.99 for 12oz.

I then sit underneath my bonnet dryer for 30 minutes and rinse!

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque

Standard

Love love loveee this masque! This is the type of conditioner that will have you rinsing out your hair way longer than you need to solely because your hair is still SO soft (like it was when you were applying the conditioner to your hair) that you still think it’s IN your hair long after it’s been rinsed away. Needless to say, I love this masque! It left my hair super soft, detangled and moisturized! Everything about this masque screams perfection for transitioners and naturals! A definite new staple for me. I purchased it from Target for $11 for 12 oz.

SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Co-Wash Conditioning Cleanser

Standard

This co-wash is one of those products that I like but…don’t LOVE. Is it cleansing? For the most part, yes. It’s moisturizing? For the most, yes. But that’s the thing, I have to preface the “yes” with a “for the most part.” Maybe it’s because I believe in shampooing my hair every week or two or maybe it’s because I think solely co-washing hair isn’t the best thing for hair but I’m not a huge fan of this co-wash. It’s too reminiscent of the Coconut & Hibiscus Conditioner. It does get the job done though, for the most part, leaving my hair cleansed and moisturized. I purchased this product from Walgreens for $11.99 for 8 fl oz.

INGREDIENTS

Deionized Water, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut)Oil*, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Magnifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter*, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Cetyl Esters, Kaolin Clay, Grapeseed Oil, Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Behentrimonium Chloride (Conditioner), Hibiscus Sabdariffa Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Melia Azadirachta (Neem) Seed Oil, Cetyl Alcohol, Vegetable Protein, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Stearyl Alcohol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), African Black Soap Extract, Sea Salt, Rosemary Extract, Caprylyl Glycol *Certified Organic Ingredient

SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo

Standard

Because this post is about a shampoo (and all shampoo posts make for a pretty dry read) I’m going to spend the majority of this post expanding upon the ingredients in this shampoo. But, first, how it works. The product is specially formulated for DRY hair. So, when I bought it, it was near the end of summer when my hair was parched! This shampoo left my hair cleansed AND moisturized! It suds up pretty easily and feels super moisturizing. It also smells amazing! Something between a tropical and sweet smell. I would definitely repurchase this shampoo. I got it at Target for $9.99 for 13 fl oz.

INGREDIENTS

Manuka Honey contains anti-inflammatory properties that soothe the scalp. Helps create a moisturizing barrier. Here is an informative article about Manuka Honey.
Mafura Oil contains high levels of beneficial oleic acid. Helps replenish oils stripped from hair. Read more about Mafura Oil here.
African Rock Fig contains antioxidant Vitamin C, which helps keep hair looking vibrant.

HOW I USE IT

Now that my hair is SUPER thick due to transitioning, I part my hair into four sections. I apply to my scalp making sure to thoroughly massage into my scalp and let the rest run down the length of my hair. Wash section by section and then apply conditioner!

SheaMoisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow and Restore Shampoo

Standard

Clarify, Clarify, Clarify! I just love to a good clarifying treatment on my hair! Within the “clarify” section of my blog, you can read alll about the benefits of clarifying hair once a month. As for this shampoo, it’s a great staple clarifying shampoo to keep in rotation in your hair regimen. The Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is meant to aid in regulating and balancing pH levels on the scalp, while softening hair to promote enhanced growth. This article goes more in depth on this wonders of ACV. I used this shampoo today as it was time for a clarify and, as I’m about to straighten my hair for the first time in 5 weeks, I wanted my hair to be free of all the products I’ve been using to maintain curl definition. This shampoo really stripped my hair of all product build up. Consequently, it slightly stripped my hair of moisture too. This is what clarifying shampoo’s are meant to do though!! Which is why they’re not meant to be used as a weekly shampoo. I would highly recommend any product junkie to add this to their product stash and use it AT LEAST once a month! I purchased this product from CVS for $10.99 for 16oz.

INGREDIENTS

Water (Aqua), Decyl Glucoside, Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate, Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend), Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil, Tocopherol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice*, Vinegar, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Niacin, Dextran, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Caramel, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract *Certified Organic Ingredient*

HOW I USE IT

I section my hair into four sections, applying the shampoo one section at a time. Clarifying shampoos are meant to get all the product build up out so make sure to really massage into your scalp and from root to end. Rinse and follow up with a moisturizing conditioner!

SheaMoisture Superfruit Complex 10 In 1 Renewal System Conditioner

Standard

The products from this line are meant to do 10 things! Hence, the name 10 in 1 Renewal System. They’re meant to: Age- Defy, Color Protect, Hydrate, Nourish, Soften, Anti-Stress, Shine, (promote) Manageability, Revive Body, and Strengthen hair. After using this product, I’m a little eh about this conditioner. I love the shampoo and the hair and scalp serum but this conditioner is a little average for me. It does have slip, I love the ingredients anddd it smells good but, overall, it’s not moisturizing enough for me. I like my conditioners to be full of slip AND moisture. I didn’t really get that with this conditioner. However, what I’ve noticed about SheaMoisture conditioners, is that even when you think they’re aren’t super hydrating they DO actually work at repairing your hair and delivering shine and strength. So, I def don’t regret my purchase. I purchased this conditioner at ULTA for $10.99 for 13oz.

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN

This product boasts about it’s “Superfruit Complex.” The packaging describes this complex as “a blend of Red Raspberry, Ketaones, Goji, Acai, and Guava Extracts.”

This product also contains Marula Oil. What is Marula oil you wonder? Marula Oil is derived from fruit seed kernels that are indigenous to Southern Africa and Madagascar. In short, this oil ” contains powerful antioxidants, high concentrations of nutrients, minerals and essential fatty acids that protect against environmental aggressors, reverse photodamage, boost cellular activity, hydrate at the deepest levels and repair the skin.” Boost cellular activity? Perfect for hair growth. Protect against environmental aggressors? Perfect for those of us who are struggling with the DC heat and humidity this summer. For a more in depth look at this wonderful oil, visit this article. Curly Nikki also featured this oil on a blog post about “7 Exotic Hair Butters & Oil For Natural Hair Greatness.”

Lastly, the packaging talks about Biotin which “nourishes individual strands for thicker, stronger hair.” We alll know about the thickening, growing effects of Biotin. BUt, if for some reason, you’ve been living under a rock, let this article enlighten you on Biotin’s wondrous effects!

HOW TO USE IT

As you would any other conditioner! Specifically, the instructions say to “apply to clean, wet hair. Gently comb through hair working from root to ends. Style as desired. For best results, cleanse first with 10 In 1 Renewal System Shampoo.”

HOW I USE IT

Just like the instructions state! haha. When I apply conditioner, no matter the brand, I like to wait 3-5 minutes before rinsing out. I apply, finger detangle (comb through with a wide tooth comb, wait 3-5 minutes and THEN rinse!
