Prenatal Vitamins in Shampoo??

As a product junkie, I feel I’ve tried many different methods of hair care. From protein treatments, to keratin treatments, deep conditioners and pre shampoos. I’m even taking Hairfinity! BUT putting prenatals in my shampoo and conditioners?? This is something that is new to me. For those that haven ‘t heard of the benefits of taking prenatals for hair care, this link will quickly bring you up to speed and inform you of the danger of water weight gain. Yikes.

Now, I’ve promised one of my close friends that I’d try this little hair care venture. Like the great friend she is, she helped me pick a brand of prenatals and crush them up to powdery perfection (pictured below). What I didn’t expect, however, was the color that it would turn my shampoo and conditioners! My once creamy white shampoos and conditioners were turned to a orangy concoction. Needless to say I didn’t this mix to EVERY shampoo and conditioner that I have, but rather those that I use the most and will be done with within the next month and a half.

Within this section of my blog, I will post updates of my hair. These updates, unlike length checks, will be of my hair when it is curly. This is the best way to depict the thickness of my hair. While my goal in taking these prenatals is to achieve healthier hair, my specific aim is for thicker fuller hair. While this goal inevitably coincides with length retention, the best way to depict any growing thickness is in my hairs curly state! So, that’s what you all lovelies will see!

I plan to try this experiment for the next two months, so January 17-March 17 (yes, I’ve already washed once with the prenatals) and at that point if I see no increase in hair health (length retention, shine, thickness, etc) then they’re out of the picture! Until then, enjoy this picture of my curly fro/bush! haha

Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls

Curl defining crèmes. They can take your hair from frizzy s-waves to full on defined curls. Trust me, I know. This product is one of the leading contenders for me, so far. Although Miss Jessie’s products are generally criticized for their price points, their results tend to balance out the price. I was able to purchase this 2 fl oz tube for $9 on Amazon. I actually purchased two for $18. I thought that one would not be enough but one has actually lasted me through three wash and go’s (still have half a tube left) and as you can see (below) my hair is crazy thick! This product can be used on curly, wavy and relaxed hair!

Water, parafffinum liquidum, VP/DMAPA acrylates copolymer, polyquaternium-37, cyclopentasiloxane, grape seed extract, nettle extract, alfalfa extract, betula alba leaf extract, lavender extract, borago officinalis extract, fennel fruit extract, ginger root extract, laminum album flower extract, chestnut extract, calendula officinalis flower extract, sunflower seed extract, matricaria flower extract, linseed seed extract, rosa gallica flower extract, silybum marianum extract, viola tricolor extract, punica granatum extract, honeysuckle flower extract, bergamont fruit extract, apricot kernel extract, hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, PG-propyl silanetriol, fragrance, polyquaternium-11, propylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate, cyclohexasiloxane, PPG-5-ceteth-20, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, ceteareth-10, propylene glycol, hydroxyethyl cellulose, disodium EDTA, PPG-1-trideceth-6, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, DMDM hydantoin, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, yellow 10, green 5

I like to use this product on my wet hair when doing wash and go’s. Below, I have pictures of two times when I’ve used this product. Both times I’ve experienced amazing curl definition!! The only drawback? This product doesn’t do much for extended frizz protection and after a few hours, hair tends to feel a bit dry. These two things can be fixed, however, with the use of a good leave in conditioner. I would suggest Giovanni’s Direct Leave In Conditioner, Eden’s Coconut Shea ALL Natural Leave In, or SheaMoisture’s Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner. Also, SheaMoisture’s Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie is perfect after applying Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls.

I know that was a lot of product mentions and info, so let me break it down. First, apply a water based leave in conditioner to hair. I like to apply Nothing But Curl Wake Up Spray (always) and another one on top. Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Moisturizing Leave In Spray is great as well. Second, apply a crème leave in conditioner such as Eden’s All Natural Leave In OR Giovanni’s Direct Leave In. Then, apply Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls to hair. If using a diffuser, it’s best to section hair off into fours at this point to achieve maximum volume while drying.
In the “Curl Diffuser” section of this blog (under “Hair styling tools) the use of a curl diffuser is explained!

One last extra step would be, as previously mentioned, to apply the SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie. This ensures soft, mangeable, moisturized and well defined curls!!
So, overall, I love Miss Jessie’s Quick Curls because the curl definition I get from this product is amazing!! But, I am still looking for a product that lessens frizz and delivers a tad bit more moisture.

Carol’s Daughter Chocolat Smoothing Blow Dry Cream

This is a product that I’ve used several times before, and tonight, when blow drying my hair. This product is very effective in providing smooth hair, minimizing frizz and providing shine! I purchased this product from the Carol’s Daughter website for $24 for 3.9 fl oz. A little expensive but it’ll last you a good while.

Water (Aqua), Cetearyl Alcohol, Isododecane, Butylene Glycol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Polyester-5, Hydrogenated Polydecene, Behentrimonium Chloride, Glycerin, Steareth-21, Isohexadecane Hydrogenated Ethylhexyl Olivate, Sodium Polyacrylate, Hydroxypropyl Guar, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Fragrance (Parfum), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Panthenol, Sodium Methoxy PEG-16 Maleate/Styrene Sulfonate Copolymer, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Extract, Theobroma Grandiflorum Seed Butter, Moringa Pterygosperma Seed Oil, Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry) Fruit Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Extract, Hydrogenated Olive Oil Unsaponifiables, Sorbitan Stearate, Steareth-2, Jojoba Esters, Dimethicone, Polysorbate 60, Hydrolyzed Silk , PPG-1-PEG-9 Lauryl Glycol Ether, Polyimide-1, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Trideceth-6, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Cystine Bis-PG-Propyl Silanetriol, Octyldodecanol, PVM/MA Copolymer, Polyquaternium-4, Aminomethyl Propanol, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Benzoate, Chlorphenesin, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzyl Salicylate, Coumarin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool

This cream contains no parabens, petroleum OR mineral oil, which is great because all of these can be very drying on hair!! The cacao extract in this product is supposed to smooth the hair, the soy protein is meant to control frizz and the keravis is meant to “rebuild” the hair so it shines

I apply this cream to my freshly washed hair (about a dime sized amount) right before I begin to section off my hair. First, however, I apply a water based leave in conditioner. I like to use SheaMoisture Yucca & Baobab Thickening Moisture Mist when preparing to heat style my hair. I then apply Carol’s Daughter’s Hair Balm to my hair because it contains a good amount of natural oils. I apply just a SMALL amount of this and distribute through my hair as a little bit of this product tends to go a LONG way. Lastly, I apply Giovanni’s Direct Leave In mixed in with this cream. I then begin to section my hair, one section at a time, as I blow dry. Before blow drying each section, I apply a dime sized amount to each section of hair.

While I do think this product delivers on moisture, shine and minimizing frizz , I do have some complaints. First, this product smells wayyy too strong. I can’t quite pinpoint the scent but it’s super sweet and doesn’t go away even when you’re done styling. Second, as you blow dry each section of your hair, you feel a bit of residue from this product on each layer. This DOES go away as soon as you flat iron your hair but it’s a bit bothersome. This could be because the instructions say to use a dime sized amount for the ENTIRETY of your hair and not each section, like I do, but stiill…I have super thick hair and a dime does nothing for me!

For these two reasons, I’m still on the hunt for a blow drying cream/protectant that doesn’t give my hair that “residue” feeling.

Below are my results after blow drying with this product

SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Milk

This product is one that NEEDS to be used in conjunction with either the accompanying Curl Enhancing Smoothie OR the Curling Soufflé for maximum benefits. I say that because this product will not deliver any moisture on it’s own. It can give you shine and minimize frizz but moisture? Not so much. I purchased this product from Walgreens for $11 for 8 fl oz. While this product line is more expensive than the others within the SheaMoisture line, they DO last longer. With these products, a little goes a LONG way!

Deionized Water , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Sugar Starch , Silk Protein , Essential Oil Blend , Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil (Neem) , Caprylyl Glycol , Sorbitol Esters , Algae Extract , Hlyssopus Officinalis Extract , Salvia Officinalis Leaf and Equisetum Arvense Extract (Sage) , Daucus Carota Sativa Seed Oil (Carrot) , Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

Similar to the other products in this Coconut & Hibiscus line, I love the Coconut oil, shea butter and Vitamin E in this product!

I use this product when doing wash and go’s. I like to apply about a nickel sized amount to each section of my hair, after dividing into four sections. Before applying, however, I spray in Nothing But Curl Wake Up spray. After distributing this spray throughout my hair, I apply this curl and style milk. After this application, I begin to apply a curl defining creme of my choice. This is where you would apply the SheaMoisture Curling Souffle, if you have it. I have yet to try this product but from the research I’ve done, if applied correctly, this product really works wonders and delivers well defined curls. Lastly, you would apply a leave in conditioner (such as Giovanni’s Direct Leave In) mixed with a small amount (and I mean a SMALL amount) of the SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. This last step delivers well moisturized, weightless, and WELL DEFINED curls!

Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo

The Coconut & Hibiscus line of SheaMoisture is meant for those that have thick, curly hair. This line helps to prevent frizz, and aid in moisture and shine. It’s very important this line only be used by those that have THICK hair. If your hair is curly but it’s not THICK and curly, this product line will most likely be way too heavy for your hair.

Like most SheaMoisture products, I purchased this shampoo from Walgreens for $11 for 13 flz oz.

Deionized Water , Decyl Glucoside (Sugar Beets) , Cocos Nucifera Oil (Coconut) , Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter) , Aloe Vera Leaf Juice , Vitamin E , Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil (Neem) , Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate (Coconut Oil) , Panthenol (Vitamin B-5) , Rosemary Extract , Silk Protein

I really love the coconut oil, shea butter and vitamin E that this shampoo contains! These ingredients really provide shine and moisture.

I use this shampoo after doing a pre poo treatment on my hair. This shampoo is sulfate free AND color safe! Two things I love since my hair is colored AND I hate how drying sulfates are on hair. This shampoo truly does deliver on shine and moisture! I also do see a decline in frizz when I use this shampoo with my wash and go’s. It gives a GREAT lather and smells just like coconut. Overall, I really like this product, although it’s not in my top 10, and would purchase again!

TRESemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray

A few weeks after I got my hair colored (ombre) I realized that I would have to be extra careful when putting heat on my hair. As I had just gotten a new flat iron (which I LOVE) and my ends were in a fragile state, I began to research products to protect my hair when styling with heat. Because my hair is SO thick, when I straighten I have to blow dry my hair first and flat iron second. Takes forever!!
This product came up in my research. In fact, TRESemme has two lines that are dedicated to protecting hair when styling!! This Keratin Smooth line and the Thermal Creations line. I got this product from Walgreens for $6 for 8 fl oz.

Water , Amodimethicone , Glycerin , PEG 12 Dimethicone , Propylene Glycol , PVP , Fragranceparfum , Polysorbate 20 , Cetrimonium Chloride , DMDM Hydantoin , Benzophenone 4 , Disodium EDTA , Hydrolyzed Silk , Hydrolyzed Keratin , Ascorbic Acid , Tocopheryl Acetate , Panthenol , Niacinamide , Biotin

The major selling points about this product for me was the biotin, hydrolyzed silk and hydrolyzed keratin. All of these together work to eliminate frizz and smooth hair!

I use this right before I blow dry my hair and not when I flat iron. When I use this product I like to spray about 8-10 pumps on my freshly washed hair, distributing with a wide tooth comb. Then, before I begin to blowdry each section of hair, I spray about 2 more pumps on.

When I started using this product, I noticed that my hair was smoother afterwards and I did experience less breakage around my ends. The smell is also amazing and not too strong. My only complaint is that I do feel a bit of residue from this product after I blow dry each section. Once I begin to flat iron, this does go away. Nonetheless, while I do feel like this product works well, I’m still on the hunt for a better heat protection spray. I can’t explain it, it’s just that product junkie feeling that there’s something better out there haha.

Carol’s Daughter Olive Oil Infusion Set

This is a product that I recently bought, but have yet to use. So, this isn’t a review of the product just yet, but as I’m unsure as to when I’ll be able to use it, and I have such high hopes for this product and think it is of benefit to a wide range of hair types, I feel the need to write a post about it!

This olive oil infusion set is meant for for different purposes: transitioning to natural, stretching relaxer touch ups, revealing perfect curls, and for dry color treated hair.”

This set consists of a hair oil and a hair smoothie, pictured below. These products do not contain any sulfates, parabens, petroleum, mineral oil, OR artificial oils. The hair oil contains olive oil which is meant to soften and condition dry hair. The lavender oil is meant to improve scalp health and hair texture. The sage and ylang ylang oil is meant to refresh and rejuvenate dry scalps. The hair smoothie contains olive oil, pro vitamin B5, and sunflower seed oil which are all meant to improve mangeability of hair as well as moisturize hair.

Again, I have yet to use this product so I cannot tell you all how I use it BUT the Carol’s Daughter website does contain tips and tutorials that I plan to use! If you want to try this product on your own, it is available at Macy’s and on the Carol’s Daughter website for $25-30. Prices do vary.
